Touring!

Curt Collins has been in his hometown of Forrest City, Arkansas, this weekend. His son, Aaron Spelzhaus, joined him. Aaron is a true prodigal son, and this weekend he shared what God has done to bring home.

The folks in Forrest City went all out!
The publicity crew was headed up by Karen Ferguson Withrow

The weekend was a product of something you don't see real often - a great collaborative effort of several of the churches in town - Valley View Christian, First Baptist, Madison Light MB, ConnectPoint, Ridgewood Baptist, and First United Methodist. What a great spirit they have - it can only strengthen their community!

Curt's latest single, "Leave It Up to You," was the inspiration for the tour. You can listen to it Here. Curt and his wife earnestly prayed all during the time that Aaron was straying, and realized all they could do was leave the results to God.

No matter our circumstances, or how much we think we have it all together, all we can really do is leave it up to God. Some of us (raising my hand) take longer than others to come to that realization.

Fun Technology!

I have noticed that at some point, non-professional bloggers have a post that says, "It's been a while since I've posted.  Life has been busy..."

Well, this is mine. :)

I've been working temporary jobs while trying to start a new business. And if you've started a new business, you know that you rarely have "free" time. That's where I'm at.

But I found a cool new toy. Actually, I've seen them around, but didn't know really what they are. They are the QR code, or Quick Response. These codes were developed by car manufacturers in the 90's to keep track of parts. Somehow, they've morphed into becoming a code to quickly link to various pieces of information. I've seen them on newspapers, magazines, the occasional Facebook post.

I found an App that will read these little squares. Then I was curious - is there a way I can use a QR code to my benefit? A quick look-up on the internet, and I found a QR generator. And literally, just a minute later, and I have my own QR code to link to my Facebook page!

So here you go - check out my new business! :)

The Pearl of Greatest Price

A few years ago, Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia, surprised a lot of folks by going in to the movie business. Michael Catt, the Senior Pastor of the church, cast a vision that their church could "reach the world from Albany, Georgia." The story is a great one, but too long for this article - you can find it Here. The result has been three movies - commercially released - and two of them have been blockbusters. Facing the Giants and Fireproof have been especially welcomed by the Christian community, as movies the whole family can see.

The story is echoing in San Angelo, Texas. Jamey Halfast, media minister at Glen Meadows Baptist Church, wrote, produced and directed a movie that's close to being released - The Pearl of Greatest Price. (Concho pearls are unique to the Concho river and a number of lakes around San Angelo.) The post-production is nearly finished, and I asked Jamey to tell us about this project.

By the way, in a matter of full disclosure, my family and I are Extras in this movie. :)

Sandy: Tell us briefly about the plot of The Pearl of Greatest Price.
Jamey: The Pearl of Greatest Price is a story about Clara, a thief who, along with her colleagues, makes a living finding expensive items online, and stealing them to sell on their own. But, when she sets her eyes on a Concho pearl from a local jewelry store, the situation steadily grows out of her control - something she's not used to.
S: How did the idea come about for doing the movie?
J: The idea of a story revolving around a Concho pearl actually came from another idea put forth by someone else's story. I was intrigued with the story, since I was looking for a story with local interest. Unfortunately, though, this person decided to take their story and pursue their own agenda. So, I had to pursue my own story.
S: Does anyone involved with the movie have professional experience?
J: Harrell Floyd, who plays jewelry store owner Frank Hines, has had minor parts in a few westerns. Heather Stamper, who plays the main character Clara, has been involved in some major motion pictures, … and has appeared in other independent films. Beyond that, my job at Glen Meadows Baptist Church has put me behind the camera for a few years. I also spent two weeks on the set of Fireproof, doing anything they would allow me to. Many of our actors have stage experience, too. But having said all that, No one has ever worked on this level of project before!
S: What has been the most challenging part of the process?
J: The most challenging part of this process has been dealing with the limitations of working with volunteers ... including myself! Because no one was getting paid, we had to work around everyone's schedule. So, what looked like a nine-month project has turned into a three-year project!
S: And the part that has been the most joyful?
J: I can say without a doubt that the filming of the movie was the most enjoyable part of the whole project. Though it was stressful most of the time because of our schedule, still - working with everyone and seeing what was written on a page come to life ... very exciting!
S: When and where will we be able to see the movie?
J: We are still in the planning stages of our release, so there's nothing really solid enough for me to tell you when and where you might see it. But I can tell you, it will be in the middle of July. Beyond that, you'll have to get on the movie's Facebook page to follow developments.
S: Any plans for another movie? :)
J: You may think the long, tough experience was enough to dissuade anyone from going through it again. But for me, I can't wait! I am really looking forward to applying all the lessons I learned while working on this project to the next. We learned so much along the way, the next movie will be dramatically better! But for hard facts about the next project, no... I have refused to focus on anything else, or The Pearl would never get done!

Can't wait to see it Jamey!

Effects of Technology

"A picture is worth a thousand words." That was true before color photographs, and now digital technology has changed the game completely.

A friend of mine is great at utilizing Facebook and other applications to show us where he's traveling (and he travels a LOT) and to talk about the ministry he represents. He "sends" us some great postcards!

He inspired me to find a way to spice up my photos. I noticed that he uses Camera+ to upload a lot of his pics. I'll tell you, it is so simple to use and I got great results right away! Here are a few of my first tries...

I never would have thought I could make art! This is gonna be fun!!

Are pictures worth more words now? :)

Curt Collins Conversation

One of the benefits of working in Christian radio is meeting a lot of people, including the artists whose music we enjoy. Curt Collins is one of those artists - I've interviewed him several times, and he has been in concert a couple of times in our area. He's a great worship leader, a great musician, and all around nice guy! Not only does he sing, but he plays guitar, piano and saxophone!

I caught up with Curt this past week...

Sandy: When you were growing up, how did you express yourself through music?
Curt: I would constantly be singing, especially around the house. My mother used to say “Sing Curt, sing!” It was pretty funny because she said that ALL of the time. My dad just used to laugh at me and mom.

S: Aside from the nuts and bolts of the Christian music business, tell us about your passion for music.

C: I have always loved music and have always loved the Lord.  If I just touch one person with my music and message then my job has been done.  It’s all about bringing people to Christ and helping those who are lost and hurting -  Matthew 28:8-20 NIV  (The Great Commission). That’s what our faith is all about, right?

S: What music inspires you?
C: All of the great ones that have touched thousands of lives - Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith, Casting Crowns, and there are many others.
S: As a songwriter, I’m sure each song you write is special to you. Is there one that, when we hear it, tells most about you as a person?
C: I think “Hiding Place” now really describes how I feel about a lot of things. Life just gets “messy,” doesn’t it?  So when it gets that way I always turn to the Lord, for He is my “hiding place!”

S: Any projects in the works?
C: Five new songs out soon that I’m writing with my producer, Jamie Slocum at CURB Records.

S: What’s on your iPod now?

C: Anything from Sinatra, Boston to Hillsong!  A huge hodgepodge of tunes I like to listen to while riding on my motorcycle!
S: Tell us about this song that I’ve linked to today.

C: “Another Day” -  This song touched many lives and stayed in the TOP 10 on radio for several weeks. The video was also in rotation on The Gospel Music Channel.  The words “one day I’ll worship You in glory ... and be free, free from all this hurt I’ve known” are SO powerful and so true.  I truly believe if we believe that Christ is the Way, Truth and the Life then we will be in that eternal place called Heaven where there is no suffering and no pain.

And this links to his Facebook page. "Like" him for updates on his new project!

Technology is Crazy!

My daughter was in an elementary school version of Grease right before school was out. They did a fantastic job! The entire Grease story in 20 minutes. Later, walking by the props from the show, Faith showed me the rotary dial phone. And then, much to my surprise, she asked me to show her how to dial it. :) Isn't it funny how kids can intuitively use a computer with a mouse by the age of 2, but aren't sure what to do with a Bell telephone from 50 years ago. Technology is a funny thing.

When the iPhone OS 4.0 was released, Apple announced that they would not continue to support the original iPhone - which was just released 4 years ago! At the rate that technology is progressing, any type of equipment we own with a computer will be obsolete in shorter and shorter periods.

Not too long ago, I wanted to make some room on my desk at home, so we went out and found a really good deal on a flat screen monitor. Got it installed and found out that my 9-year-old PC wouldn't support it.

I'm sure you have a story for this subject, too.

Well, at my work, they upgraded the software in the computer lab, and immediately found out that the hardware would need to be upgraded as well. Of course.

The old monitors were retired, and looked like they were lined up to go out to pasture. Kind of sad. They showed a lot of students some good class time.

Focus on One Pretty Thing

Faith, our daughter, painted a beautiful picture for me for Mother's Day. Isn't every picture painted for Mother's Day priceless?!  :)  She told me it was based on a Georgia O'Keeffe painting. Georgia (Faith is on a first-name basis with her) used a "window" technique in order to focus on "one pretty thing."

I just looked it up today. And I knew which one she copied at a glance!

Yeah, I'm framing the top one. :)
